The investigators intend to establish a Medical Education Research Group (MERG) within the predoctoral section that will serve as the focus for educational research activities within the department. Modeled after the successful initiation of the Department's other research focus groups, the Medicine Education Research Group will identify and integrate essential components for building a research infrastructure. These components includes: (a) a clearly defined research need in general medical education, with a particular focus in cross sectional issues in predoctoral and graduate education; (b) motivation and enthusiasm of faculty members for collaboration in educational research activities through MERG; and (c) regular meetings for research agenda setting and progress reports.

The implementation of the Prospective Payment System for Inpatient Rehabilitations Facilities is one of the most important changes in government financing of rehab services in the last twenty years. Just as the implementation of the DRG system created the potential for changes in the patterns of patient care in acute care hospitals, the PPS system for inpatient rehabilitation facilities creates a new set of incentives, some of which may adversely impact patient care for rehab facilities.

This is a continuation grant for a project that began in 1985. The University of Washington School of Medicine has created partnerships in the WWAMI states (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) to improve the health of the region though initiatives that move education of health professionals out into the region. The overall goal is to improve the distribution of health professionals by setting up educational opportunities and incentives for practice in rural and underserved settings.
