Course/Faculty Evaluation

The Department of Medical Education and Biomedical Informatics (MEBI) is responsible for the UW School of Medicine's Course and Instructor Evaluation System. This system evaluates all Human Biology course offerings and faculty who teach them, both at the UW and throughout the WWAMI Region. Each course is evaluated every year, using a core set of items. Every other year, each course has an in-depth course-specific evaluation that is designed by Dr. Craig Scott, in conjunction with two student evaluators. Additional courses are evaluated upon request.

Individual instructors are evaluated using questions that relate to their particular type of involvement in the course. Machine-scored course evaluation results and composite written comments about courses are distributed to each course's two course-specific student evaluators who write a course evaluation narrative statement for their assigned course. The assistant dean for curriculum distributes these summary evaluation statements along with computer graphics, developed by MEBI, at an end-of-quarter meeting of each year's course chairs and student evaluators.

In addition, the course evaluation results and the summary evaluation narratives are distributed to the course chair, the course chair's department chair, and to the associate dean for curriculum. Individual machine-scored faculty evaluation results are distributed to a more limited protocol to the evaluated faculty member, the course chair, the chair of the faculty member's department, and the assistant dean for curriculum. In accordance with a mandate from the office of academic affairs, individual faculty members are advised to maintain a file of their instructional evaluations and departments are advised to maintain files of all faculty evaluations for their faculty. MEBI does not maintain master files of faculty evaluations.
